Educating the fishermen about penalization of sea turtle crimes
Seahorse for Sea Turtles
On Hainan Island many sea turtles are sold illegally in the markets. To combat the illegal selling of sea turtles we are taking a unique approach. There is a greater risk associated with selling sea turtles, and seahorses can be more profitable, so fishermen and poachers would rather sell sea horses over sea turtles. Currently, the poachers on Hainan Island do not have the knowledge and expertise to breed seahorses in captivity. However, our marine biologists at Sea Turtles 911 are able to breed and raise seahorses in captivity and trade them in exchange for sea turtles. Through our trades, we are not only saving sea turtles but we are also reducing the collection pressure on wild seahorse populations.
