Sea Turtles 911 staff and volunteers conduct weekly educational programs for students at our floating hospital and universities in Hainan. Our education programs give the students an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge on sea turtle conservation with the use of presentations and hands-on learning. A tour of our hospital gives students opportunities to participate in different aspects of sea turtle rehabilitation ranging from feeding to administering medical treatment with the help of our staff. During the education program, we aim to teach students to identify the various species of sea turtles found in the South China Sea, educate about sea turtles’ life history, fun facts and the major threats to sea turtle survival both locally and globally. By discussing these threats, we hope to spread awareness of the pressures facing these magnificent sea creatures and educate students on what they can do to help.
Educating Local Fishermen Community
We believe that education is our greatest tool for conservation. In an effort to spread awareness of sea turtle conservation and foster relationships with the local fisherman and their families, we offer free English lessons in the floating village to the fishermen’s children. As part of our English Education Program, volunteers and/or staff members schedule lessons with students two times a week to review writing, grammar, conversational English, and, to educate them about sea turtle conservation. By teaching them English, these children can gain opportunities that come with knowing a second language and learn to appreciate the work our organization does to alleviate the stresses facing sea turtles. Knowing that these children are the future of China, our hope is that they will become advocates of sea turtle conservation and, one day, become leaders for all environmental efforts.
